Up and coming Nueva Alcántara, beachside San Pedro
| 11th Nov
One of the most up and coming areas of Marbella right now is Nueva Alcántara, the beachside part of San Pedro Alcántara – the charming little town just west of Puerto Banús.
Originally a small agricultural community founded in the 19th century, San Pedro Alcántara still has the ambience of a traditional Andalusian village, yet where fields of sugarcane once covered much of the coastal plain today you will find attractive residential areas set within landscaped gardens. The village has grown into a bustling little town that provides a wide range of services and is popular with locals and visitors alike for its authentic restaurants, cafés and tapas bars, but San Pedro also retains some of the last tracts of undeveloped coastal land this close to Puerto Banús and Marbella town.
In fact, Nueva Alcántara, as this area is known, is little more than five minutes removed from these glamorous spots, as well as ten minutes from the Golf Valley of Nueva Andalucía, and as such is greatly in demand. Development first began here in the 1970s with a small community of beachside villas and townhouses, and resumed in the 2000s with luxury apartment complexes surrounded by lush subtropical gardens. Though private they are within walking distance of San Pedro’s sandy beach and attractive seaside promenade, which links all the way through to Puerto Banús and Marbella.
It is a route popular with walkers, joggers, cyclists, dog owners and fitness fans, and is lined with a great choice of cafés and restaurants ranging from casual to luxurious. This beachside area is in turn connected to San Pedro and the coastal road by a series of wide tree-lined boulevards that feature playgrounds for children and also one of the best paddle racquet clubs on the Costa del Sol, a top international school and a growing number of trendy eateries, healthy cafés and boutiques.
The once busy road passing between Nueva Alcántara and San Pedro, en route between Marbella and Estepona, now runs through a tunnel underground, allowing this part of the coast to reclaim a more peaceful ambience whilst being well-connected to the rest of the coast. The broad area above the tunnel, which marks the physical boundary between San Pedro and Nueva Alcántara, has been converted into a wonderful modern boulevard complete with parks, playgrounds, fountains, an auditorium and a series of popular tapas bars.
It is also the scene of regular events, including an open-air ice skating rink during Christmas, and serves as a perfect ‘green corridor’ that has only added to the desirability of the new apartment complexes being built in Nueva Alcántara right now.
