Estepona’s charming historic centre

The ‘Old Town’ at the heart of Estepona enchants more than ever now it has been the main focus on an ongoing process of restoration and beautification. The pretty coastal town was the first on the Costa del Sol to roll up its sleeves and pick itself up during the recession, and this sense of initiative has been well-rewarded, as Estepona is undergoing something of a renaissance.

It is now more pleasant than ever to wonder the pedestrian streets that criss-cross the historic centre of the town. Lined with shops, boutiques, cafés, restaurants and ice cream parlours, they form the heart of the café society and lively town vibe that Spain is so popular for. And indeed, the ebb and flow of daily life in this Andalusian fishing and resort town is a pleasure to be part of.

Among the sights to enjoy in the charmingly compact old quarter situated within an easy stroll of the town’s broad sandy beaches is the Plaza de las Flores where people traditionally gather to enjoy a drink, ice cream or meal under the fragrant blossom of orange trees. It is an area with a growing gastronomic reputation, as the number of good restaurants and attractive gastro tapas bars is growing.

Nearby is the ‘Mercado Municipal’, a delightful covered market offering fresh produce and now also a collection of stylish little tapas bars, cafés and wine bars that make use of having the freshest ingredients right on their doorstep. Lovers of history, culture and architecture may also want to visit the remnants of the old town walls and the Castillo de San Luis that extend from here, or the nearby Torre del Reloj and Santa María de los Remedios church.

Above all, though, Estepona’s historic centre is about charm, and it is a charm best personified by the pretty flower pots that adorn the walls of its picturesque streets, squares and alleyways, where local residents chose the colours and tones that now enliven and beautify one of the Costa del Sol’s prettiest coastal towns.
