Sporty Benahavis: there’s more than just great food in the village!
| 30th Dec
Customarily when you hear talk of the village of Benahavis, your thoughts are diverted with tales of the gastronomic delights served in the remarkably high number of quality restaurants that line its cobbled streets. Frequently referred to as ‘the dining room of the Costa del Sol’, the beautiful mountain village is understandably a ‘must visit’ destination for passionate foodies and restaurant goers visiting or living in the area.
Then, just second tier to the sumptuous eateries on the ‘why visit Benahavis?’ list are the many varied sport and leisure activities available in the village and the surrounding countryside. Choices for sporting enthusiasts and those just trying to get healthier include tennis and football facilities in the village centre, as well as challenging walks and golf courses in the region. Cyclists can bring their two wheel vehicle of choice and tackle the challenging route from Benahavis up to the town of Ronda or a daring hurtle around a mountain bike trail.
So why not visit Benahavis for some healthy exercise in a beautiful outdoor setting and then head to the village for a first class lunch or dinner?
For more information about the more common amenities in Benahavis, nearby golf courses or a leisure activity slightly off the beaten track, check out the additional details noted below.
Benahavis is situated in the foothills of the Sierra Blanca mountains in the Serranía de Ronda, only a few kilometres from Marbella and the town of San Pedro de Alcántara.
A stand out activity that takes full advantage of the stunning local natural landscape is the adventurous ‘canyoning’ that can be experienced along a river gorge just outside of the village. Waterfalls, rock pools and thrilling rock passages are to be tackled, jumped and enjoyed along a beautiful and fascinating route created by the flowing water of the Río Guadalmina.
There are innumerous walks to be undertaken in and around Benahavis and the surrounding Las Angosturas Natural Park. A charming new wooden bridge now unites the two banks of the Río Guadalmina and stands as a starting point for a picturesque ramble that spans about an hour and takes you into the picturesque park. The bridge can be found on the right hand side of the Benahavis road not long before you enter the village.
Adventurous free climbers should head to the Las Angosturas gorge at the entrance of Benahavis village to access over sixty climbing routes of differing levels of complexity.
